Today I happened to be walking down Lake St. and saw a young man who appeared to be homeless. After having a brief interaction with him, on the car ride home, I began to think. Imagine waking up every day knowing the society you live in and the system which it has been built upon, actively works against you. The world you live in, whether purposeful or implicitly, attempts to diminish your chances of success at every turn. Now I don't know the situation this person was in, or what he may have been thinking, but this very real scenario could make it incredibly hard to stay motivated and make your vision a reality. This is something I feel can tie easily into the modern climate with immigration. Families or individuals attempting to escape persecution or even a corrupt system in which they are much less likely to succeed. These are many of the people trying to get across the border to America where things are far from perfect, yet better in many regards. They simply want to live in a place where they have better opportunities or feel safer and who can blame them? While there is a system in place designed to help these very people assimilate into this country, it is widely accepted that this system has many issues preventing people from immigrating in a timely fashion.
However, as a society, we have set certain rules to live by and methods to obtain things by. If these laws are thrown aside then the capacity America has for a civil working society is diminished. Additionally, there is only a finite amount of people this land can hold, and unfortunately for many, not everybody can live here. Whether a turn of fortune, luck, fate, or whatever it may be, some have been allotted the right to live here through no effort of their own while others do their best to prove and earn theirs. This issue clearly has many nuances, and through this post, unfortunately, I don't propose any solution. Just a challenge to find a medium. Something which will result in disappointment from supporters on both sides of the issue. One that will benefit the most people, while maintaining the society in which we live.
